Fontana All-High Regatta
On Monday May 25, 2009, the West Side Rowing Club will be hosting the 25th Annual Fontana All-High Regatta. 10 local programs will compete in 20 events on the historic Black Rock Canal.

Canadian Scholastic National Championships
West Side crews will be crossing the boarder to compete in the 2009 Canadian Scholastic Championships on May 29-31. Racing will begin on Friday in St. Catharine's, ONT with all finals being raced on Sunday. Race information can be found on the official website of the
Scholastic Rowing Championships
14 crews from West Side (5 from Canisius High School, 4 from Nardin, 2 from Buffalo Seminary, and 1 from City Honors, St. Joe's Collegiate Institute and Holy Angels respectively) traveled to Trenton, New Jersey for the 2009 Scholastic National Championships on Lake Mercer. Of the 14 crews that went, 7 made the Grand Final in their respective events.

New York State Rowing Championships
51 crews from West Side spend Mother's Day weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY for the 2009 New York State Scholastic Championships. After two days of racing in less than ideal conditions, 22 West Side crews came home with medals (9 Gold, 6 Silver, 7 Bronze).
Gold Medal Winners: West Side Junior Women (Senior 8, Lightweight 8, Novice 8), West Side Junior Men (Novice 4+), Canisius High School (Senior 8, Lightweight 8, Lightweight 4, Freshman 8), Nardin Academy (Lightweight 8).
Silver Medal Winners: City Honors (Senior Women's 4x), St. Joe's Collegiate Institute (Lightweight 8), Canisius High School (Men's 2nd 8, Novice 8), Buffalo Seminary (Freshman 4+), Nichols High School (Women's Novice 4).
Bronze Medal Winners: City Honors (Men's Senior 4+, Men's Freshman 8), Nardin Academy (Women's Senior 4, Lightweight 4), St. Joe's Collegiate Institute (Men's Freshman 8, Novice 4+).
John Bennett Regatta
On May 3rd, the West Side Rowing Club hosted the 20th annual John Bennett Regatta. 21 programs from Buffalo, Rochester and Canada converged on Cotter's Point to compete in 18 Events.
Notable victories were turned in by the West Side Junior Women who won the Senior 8, Lightweight 8, Junior 8, and Novice 8. Nardin Academy posted a solid win in the Women's Lightweight 4+ race and Canisius High School won the Senior Men's 8, Freshman/novice 8 and Senior 4 events.

West Siders in Olympic Finals
Steve Coppola and have advanced their United States Crews to the finals in the 2008 Olympic Games. The US Women's 8 coached by Tom will be racing in the final at 5:10am and Steve will row for Olympic gold in the US Men's 8 at 5:30am on Sunday August 17th (all times EST).
All are welcome to come and watch Buffalo's rowing Olympians at the West Side Rowing Club on Sunday August 17th between 2:00pm-6:00pm. Join the family and friends of Olympic rower Steve Coppola and Olympic Women's Rowing coach Tom Terhaar as we cheer on their crews in Beijing. We will be showing replays of the races on the hour starting at 2pm. Cost is $15 per person and food and drinks will be served.

West Side Crews Win 3 golds at the Canadian Henley
Three crews from West Side came home after a week of racing with gold medals from the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. The Jr. B Women's 8, consisting of Abby Giancola, Rachel Hirschbeck, Shannon McDonnell, Sage Green, Elizabeth Rutowski, Birttany Knasak, Kellie Solowski, Kitty (K-Town) Mahoney and Olympia Giouleskas won the 2000 meter race by 2.06 seconds over South Niagara Rowing Club and the rest of the field. This is the second year in a row that West Side has won this event.
On Friday, the Senior B Lightweight Men's 4- defeated Kingston Rowing Club by 1.14 seconds to bring home the 2nd gold medal to West Side. Matt Rung, Justin Farrington, Jim Thompson, and Newton Sears sprinted through the Kingston Crew in the final 20 strokes of the race to capture the gold.
The final gold medal of the weekend was won by the Senior B Lightweight Women's 8. The crew of Alison Todd, Mallorie Reinecke, Danielle Carlino, Sarah Giancola, Liz LaLonde, Charlotte Lane, Kelsey Kean, Erin Wylie and Puja Sztorc crushed the rest of the field to win the 500-meter dash by 2.49 seconds.
Other notable finishes from the 126th Royal Canadian Henley include: Sr. B Women's 8 (2nd), Senior Men's 8 (2nd), Sr. B Lightweight Women's 8 (2nd), Jr. B Men's 8-B boat (3rd), Jr. B Men's 4-A boat (3rd), Sr. B Lightweight Women's 1x (3rd).

Winter Training under way at West Side
With the water temperature now near freezing and the docks removed from the water, West Side athletes are now indoors. Picking up where the fall season left off, athletes are now utilizing the 40 ergs, weights and the 10 tank seats inside the West Side Rowing Club. During the next few months, athletes will be training for various indoor races including the C.R.A.S.H.-B Championships that will be held in late February .
5 West Side Athletes, 2 Coaches and 2 Crews Receive All-State Honors
The West Side Rowing Club would like to congratulate the following athletes for receiving 1st Team All-State honors: Mike Szymoniak (Canisius HS/WSRC), Jim Thompson (Canisius H.S./WSRC), Patrick Fernbach (Canisius HS/WSRC), Liz LaLonde (Nardin Academy/WSRC) and Hillary Epes (Buffalo Seminary/WSRC). Jim Neil (Canisius HS) was named Boy's Coach of the year and Bob Becht (Buffalo Seminary) was named Girl's Coach of the Year. The Canisius H.S. Lightweight 8 was named the New York State Boy's Boat of the Year and the Buffalo Seminary Junior Women's 4 with coxswain received honorable mention for the Girl's Boat of the year. Congratulations to all honorees.
